NOPO Big Band
Music Makes it Worth it.
At the heart of NoPo Big Band is a deep commitment to community. Our ensemble brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds and experiences, creating a vibrant and inclusive space where everyone is encouraged to grow. NoPo serves as both a forum and a supportive environment, inviting members to take creative risks, explore new musical ideas, and step into the spotlight with solos.
Through our dedication to delivering high-quality big band music, we aim to foster a deeper appreciation for this timeless genre and enrich the cultural fabric of Portland. Together, we celebrate the joy of music—living, swinging, playing, dancing, and singing as one.
Founded in 2010 in the heart of North Portland, NoPo Big Band is one of the area’s most exciting and dynamic new ensembles. This 17-piece band features a classic big band lineup—five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, and a rhythm section of guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums—creating a rich, full sound.
NoPo Big Band is known for its eclectic mix of styles and genres, blending swing, blues, bossa nova, and Basie-inspired classics. With occasional guest instrumentalists and vocalists, every performance offers fresh surprises and a vibrant musical tapestry that keeps audiences coming back for more.

Our Story
This 17-piece ensemble is arranged as a typical 5/4/4 + rhythm section big band: 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a rhythm section of guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. We have occasional surprise instrumentalists and vocalists, all adding to a collage of styles and genres, from swing to blues, from bossa to Basie.
